Guided Hikes From The Hills To The Peaks Of The Apennines
These areas are a true hiking paradise. Just think that the province of Reggio Emilia alone has over 1,000 km of marked trails, from the plains to the peaks of the Apennines. Paolo is a hiking guide and president of a Hiking Guides Association, “Vette e Baite” (i.e. Peaks and Huts). The perfect person to organize a full-day or half-day outing on the routes that arise near Dimidium or not far away. An excursion among the castles along the calanques valleys of the area or an itinerary to reach the summit of Cusna, the second highest in the Northern Apennines: he can guide you or provide you with the map and directions for any of your routes, depending on your needs.
Visit and walk through the vineyard with tasting in the winery
Perhaps not many people know this, but this is a land of wines and vineyards, and just a few steps away you cannot miss the opportunity to visit a small winery nestled in the heart of the hills.
Naturally produced wines and lots of passion are the ingredients of the winery owned by Federico and his family, who are waiting for you for a tour through the rows and of course a tasting of their products.
Visit and tasting at a vinegar factory
Much easier to imagine these lands as the homeland of balsamic vinegar. Indeed, right near Dimidium, there are some vinegar houses that deserve to be visited to get a close look at the rigorous production process and taste the different qualities of vinegar that are produced.
You will be amazed by the beauty of a vinegar house, the aroma that each little barrel manages to release, and the flavor that each variety leaves in your mouth during a tasting, accompanied, of course, by local products.

Visit and tasting at the Selvapiana Social Dairy
Even easier is to bring these places closer to the production of one of our country’s culinary excellences, Parmigiano Reggiano. But how is it produced? Who is the cheesemaker? Where does the little milk truck that can be seen whizzing along the roads in these hills come from?
Selvapiana and its dairy are the ideal place to learn all this and to experience the magic of a tasting in the maturing warehouse, among tall shelves of wheels waiting, patiently, for time to pass.
Discover Medieval Castles And Villages
These are the lands of Matilde of Canossa, one of the most influential women in history and a highly significant figure of the medieval period. These hills are scattered with castles that represent her power: Canossa, Rossena, Carpineti, Bianello, Sarzano; and small villages connected to them, such as those of Bergogno, Rossena, Vercallo, or Votigno. The latter made even more famous for its connection to Tibet and the Buddhist religion. You cannot miss a visit! Some are guided and by appointment only, contact us to find out how to organize them.
Via Ferrata, Climbing, Or Canyoning In The Apennines
Our Apennines, especially those in Reggio, are a mix of unique and unexpected landscapes: our peaks are terraces overlooking the sea not far away and, at the same time, lookout points that scrutinize the horizon admiring the unmistakable profile of the Alps, from Monviso to Monte Rosa. And then there’s her, the queen, the Pietra di Bismantova, something unique in our country and a well-known destination for many climbers. Right here, with the local mountain guides, you can enjoy a beautiful day on vie ferrate (there are 3 of them) or, for the more passionate, long routes. Further up and not far away, on the hottest days, you can instead enjoy the beauty of a day of canyoning on the Dolo stream.
Dimidium and Selvapiana are the ideal starting points to experience fantastic days of outdoor activities nearby, before returning for a pleasant evening in the cool of the hills.
Discover Matilde's Hills On An E-Bike
These
gentle hills are the perfect place to experience the pleasure of an e-bike
ride. There are many routes suitable for everyone to explore the heart of
Matilde’s lands. Scenic roads, tracks, small trails – nothing is missing to
spend a few hours, half a day, or a whole day in the saddle. You can discover
the most picturesque viewpoints, places of historical interest, small villages,
and all the realities that populate this area.
Some
tours start directly from Dimidium where you can already find your e-bike ready
and waiting for you; other routes are not far from here or from the rental
location, which is just a few minutes away by car from our B&B.
A unique
opportunity to get to know Matilde’s hills more closely between Parma and
Reggio.
A Tour Among The Big Benches
The province of Reggio is one of the most important in the Big Bench circuit. There are a total of 10 giant benches scattered across our territory, some of which are very close to Dimidium. Getting to them is very easy, whether by car, on foot, or by bike, and the panorama that awaits you is breathtaking. Like the one that unfolds before the eyes of those who visit the Big Bench of Trinità, just a few minutes from Selvapiana: the Pietra di Bismantova in the foreground, the Cusna in the background, the castle of Rossena behind, and beyond the plain, and, on clearer days, the profile of the Alps. Nearby is also the one in Albareto, and just a few kilometers away is the one in Carpineti, on Monte Fosola, also in a truly unique position.
Horseback Riding Experience
There are many ways to discover our territory and its uniqueness, but there is something particularly relaxing about exploring it on horseback. Immersing yourself in nature, at a slow pace and in connection with the surroundings, you can discover our territory from a different and privileged perspective: from the Tassobbio Valley to the gentle slopes of the hills, to Matilde’s castles, to ancient villages, and unique observation points. The excursions are guided by expert federal FISE technicians, ready to make you experience an unforgettable and authentic adventure on these magnificent animals, regardless of your level of preparation.
